San Francisco Mellan 2003 och 2021 delade vi årligen ut ett stipendium till akademisk forskning och andra (icke-akademiska) projekt med anknytning till Sverige och/eller svenskar – exempelvis projekt inom svensk kultur, historia, musik, konst, litteratur, media eller miljö.
SWEA San Franciscos stipendium 2021 tilldelas JoAnn Conrad för hennes projekt med titeln “Stories of Women: The Fairy Tale Collaborations of Anna Wahlenberg and Aina Stenberg Masolle.” Hon behandlar kvinnors roll för den barnlitteratur som lästes av generationer av svenska barn som växte upp före Pippi Långstrump.
Fick SWEA San Franciscos stipendium 2020 för sitt projekt “The Archaeology of Islamic and Scandinavian Heritage in Viking-Age Sweden” som studerar de omfattande sociala och ekonomiska kontakterna mellan vikingatidens Skandinavien och kalifaten i den muslimska världen. Projektet är en del av hennes doktorsavhandling i antropologisk arkeologi vid University of California Berkeley. Sara läser och/eller skriver: arabiska, danska, tyska, isländska, norska, latin, ”old norse” och polska.
SWEA San Franciscos stipendiekommitté har utsett Emil Ernström till mottagare av SWEA San Franciscos stipendium 2019. Ernström är kompositör och ljud-designer, uppvuxen i Palo Alto, och han avslutar för närvarande sina studier för en Bachelor of Artsexamen vid Yale University. Han arbetar framför allt inom klassisk musik med stycken för orkester och kammarmusikensembler men också interdisciplinärt med musik för teater, film och dans.
To prepare for a multimedia exhibition entitled The World of Ingmar Bergman showcasing the cultural landscape and background from which Ingmar Bergman emerged.
To finish the doctoral dissertation entitled The Singing Bone: Collective Creativity of a Queer Imaginary and to publish an article on Selma Lagerlöf in a scholarly journal.
The Scholarship Committee of SWEA San Francisco has chosen Mimi Nielsen as the recipient of the 2017 SWEA San Francisco Scholarship. Her project is to finish her doctoral dissertation at the University of Washington, entitled “Playing the Edge: The Work of Affect in Emilie Flygare-Carlén’s Authorship and Reception.”
For her dissertation entitled “Sexual Rights and Human Rights: Mapping the Evolution of LGBT Rights in Swedish Foreign Policy”
For ”Sami Life and Myths”, her art project and exhibition based on her studies of the Sami population near Kiruna.

2013 Richard G. Mann för primärforskning vid museer och arkiv i Stockholm för en bok och ytterligare publikationer om den framstående svenske konstnären Eugène Jansson.

2011 Mari Valverde för hennes projekt med namnet ”Swedish Song Database: Online Resource for Conductors and Singers”.
2010 Kimberly La Palm för hennes projekt att studera relationen mellan text, regi, framförande och mottagande av ett drama: “Ethnography of Stockholms Stadsteater’s production of Fadren.”
2009 Mark Säfström, dissertation dealing with religious and democratic pluralism in the Swedish popular political movements around 1900. The central figure of the dissertation is the preacher, teetotaler and member of Parliament Paul Peter Waldenström.
2009 Thomas K. Johnson for a dissertation in Scandinavian ethnology with translation into English of older Swedish books on magic and popular beliefs concerning folk healers (“kloka gubbar, kloka gummor”) and their position in society.
2008 Carolyn McAndrews project consisting of a study of road safety in Sweden, comparing it with practices in Mexico and the United States.
2007 Victoria Häggblom, project to translate Elisabeth Rynell’s novel ”Till Mervas” into English.
2007 Keith Murphy, for his project consisting of an ethnographic study of the design world in Sweden.
2006 Amanda Doxtater, project to translate Karin Boye’s 1934 novel ”Kris (Crisis)” into English, with a critical introduction.
